Adam Czerniakow?s biography is a unique story. It bears an imprint of all major Polish historical events of the late 19th and the first part of the 20th centuries, including the partitions, the short period of independence, and the invasion by Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia. He was one of the leaders of Polish Jews. His moral courage, refusal to yield to stereotypes, and non-conformism did not earn him much popularity. Since the year 1939 he headed the Warsaw Judenrat. On the second day of the deportation of Warsaw Jews to the death camp of Treblinka, July 23, 1942, he committed suicide.
